The attorneys at Thorn Law Group provide targeted advice and guidance in a diverse range of international banking law matters. Our firm represents individuals, financial institutions and banks in controversies before the Internal Revenue Service and the U.S. Department of Justice. With more than 80 years of collective experience, our legal team is well-positioned to successfully address these complex, high-stakes issues and disputes. We are very familiar with the challenges faced by entities operating throughout the banking industry and have broad experience advising and representing:
- U.S. financial institutions
- Foreign financial institutions
- Public banks
- Private banks
- Offshore banks
Advising Foreign Banks and International Financial Institutions
International financial institutions have been under increased scrutiny since the U.S. took action against UBS AG, Switzerland’s largest bank, for assisting Americans in evading their tax obligations. In 2009, UBS entered into a deferred prosecution agreement with the Department of Justice agreeing to pay $780 million in fines, penalties, interest and restitution. As part of the agreement UBS also agreed to cooperate with U.S. authorities and provide the U.S. government with the identities and account information for U.S. customers with hidden accounts.
The lawyers at our firm have an extensive understanding of the U.S. regulatory requirements governing foreign banks doing business in the United States. We regularly advise foreign financial institutions on compliance programs and work with these institutions to ensure that their activities are in full compliance with both U.S. law and the world banking community’s rules and standards.
Representing Clients in Private Banking Disputes
In addition to representing international financial institutions, the legal team at Thorn Law Group also counsels and represents individuals and entities who are involved in private disputes with foreign banks. We draw upon our knowledge of complex banking laws in jurisdictions throughout the world to help our clients understand their options and recover losses in claims involving the mismanagement of assets and other breaches of fiduciary obligations.
